Control how Firefox opens links
Tired of new windows and tabs opening when you click on a link ? You want to control how each link opens in Firefox ? This article is about how to configure Firefox to force all links to open in the same tab (by default) and choose when you want firefox to open a link in a new tab (or new window).
Article disponible en français : controler l’ouverture des liens (firefox, opera, internet explorer).
With Firefox, that’s quite simple, but most users don’t spend time in Firefox configuration, missing some usefull tips.
You first have to force each link to open in the same tab, by default, then I explain how to open links by a simple way in a new tab.
1 : Force all links to open in the same tab
Firefox windows
- Open the Tools menu
- click Options…
- get in the Tabs tab
- check Force links that open a new window to open in :
- and bellow choose, the same tab/window as the link
Firefox Linux
- Open the Edit menu
- click Preferences
- get in the Tabs tab
- check Force links that open a new window to open in :
- and bellow choose, the same tab/window as the link
That’s done, all links will open in the same tab, even those with the target="_blank" and the javascript links. But sometimes, you may want to open a link in a new tab or in new windows.
2 : Open links in a firefox new tab/window
- To open a link in a new tab in background :
hold on the Ctrl key and click on the link; you can also click on the wheel button of the mouse. - To open a link in a new tab in foreground :
hold on the Ctrl key plus the
key and click on the link. - To open a link in a new window :
hold on the
key and click on the link.
Note that if you checked the option Select new tabs opened from links the way to open links in foreground and background are reversed.
That’s all things are as they should be : the user controls.
